Jan Maly joins SemSys!

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Jan Maly as Assistant Professor in the SemSys group from 1st of July 2024!

Jan mainly works in the areas of Computational Social Choice, Knowledge Representation and Logic. In particular, he is interested in developing tools that help us to make better and fairer decisions. Before joining SemSys, he carried out the research project “A holistic analysis of participatory budgeting” for which he was granted an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship. In this project, he studied Participatory Budgeting, as a multi-year, city-wide process that consists of several stages. From September 2021 to April 2023, he worked on the project at the University of Amsterdam as a member of the Computational Social Choice (COMSOC Group) of Ulle Endriss and from May 2023 to May 2024 at TU Wien as a member of Databases and Artificial Intelligence Group (DBAI).

During his first week of work at the WU, Jan gave an invited talk surveying the recent progress in our understanding of proportionality in participatory budgeting at the PB Workshop of the 17th Meeting of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare, which was hosted by the Paris School of Economics.
